Spring Festivities at the Museum

Spring Festivities at the Museum

Falling on March 20 in 2025, the Spring Equinox (春分) is a day where day and night are of equal length. Following fifteen days after the Spring Equinox is the Qingming Festival (清明節), a day for honouring ancestors by visiting their graves, cleaning them, and making ritual offerings. These important spring holidays encourage friends and families to get together and go outside to enjoy nature.

Join us in celebrating the arrival of spring by making a special spring-themed craft, as well as enjoying a taste of the traditional Chinese seasonal delicacy of qingtuan (青糰; mugwort rice cakes)!

Enhance your enjoyment of spring flowers by designing a one of a kind paper vase! Using an etching technique with oil pastels and paint, this drop-in, family-friendly craft activity draws inspiration from the work of Karen Tam, a Montreal-based installation artist who is featured in our Reshaping Collections: Where History Meets Art exhibition. Tam’s installation Whispering Jade Bazaar reimagines Chinatown curio shops and explores the ways in which Chinese culture is constructed and commercialized. Combining handmade sculptures, found objects, and authentic artifacts, Tam plays with notions between authenticity and artificiality in expressions of Chinese heritage.

To participate, please bring a small bottle, container, or vessel from home to serve as the base for your paper vase and to display your florals in celebration of spring! All other craft materials will be provided, while supplies last.
