Orange Shirt Day 2023 | Vancouver
Since 1788, Chinese and Indigenous peoples have had a long history of interactions and respectful relations in British Columbia. In many places across the province, common experiences of racism and discrimination brought these communities together. They forged close ties in many sites including canneries, restaurants, and Chinatowns.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters movement. Join us on Saturday, September 30th on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in learning about and reflecting on the impacts of the Indian residential school system in Canada.
Vancouver location: We are hosting a live reading of "Every Child Matters" by Phyllis Webstad in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin at 2 p.m. with guest presenter Esther Leung-Kong. Esther will speak about the significance of Orange Shirt Day, introduce some phrases in Cantonese and Mandarin, and facilitate an activity for all participants to learn more. This program is geared for visitors of all ages, but particularly suitable for children and families. Event is free with admission.
Victoria location: We will offer bannock and mooncake tastings from 11:30 a.m. until quantities last. Mooncake will be available in celebration of the Mid-Autumn festival and the bannock prepared by a Songhees elder will mark the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
Both our Vancouver and Victoria locations will feature resources to further learning about these important topics and initiatives.
