CCM and Chinese Canadian Military Museum Honour the Stories of Chinese Canadian Veterans

Vivid poppies solemnly animate our exhibition space in observance of Remembrance Day. 

In collaboration with the Chinese Canadian Military Museum, Chinese Canadian Museum is highlighting stories in honour of the Chinese Canadian veterans. 

Despite exclusion, more than 600 Chinese Canadians volunteered to serve in WWII. Initially, they were not enlisted by Canada’s navy and air force because of their ethnicity. Later during the war, they were recruited for the same reason to join secret missions in Japanese-occupied territories in Asia where Chinese Canadians could blend in with the local population.  

The service and sacrifice of Chinese Canadians in the World Wars paved the way to the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1947 and the right to vote in federal and provincial elections in 1949. 

Displays at our gallery feature stories and objects of veterans Victor Louie, Ronald Lee, and Jim Gen Lee.
